Animal Licensing
Did you know...all dogs, cats and ferrets in Nassau County must have a current rabies vaccination and license by the age of four (4) months and annually thereafter?
We are frequently asked, "So why should I license my pet?" First of all, it is immediate visual proof that your pet is currently vaccinated against rabies. Because rabies is prevalent in our area, we want to make sure your animal is protected.
Secondly, if your pet gets lost and is wearing a license tag, our staff can immediately contact you to let you know your pet has been found. In other words,
"A license is a phone call home for a pet without a cell phone!"
County Ordinance 6-42: "Any person owning, keeping, harboring, or having custody of a dog, cat, or ferret four (4) months of age or older within this county must secure a county license from a veterinarian or from the county animal control facility and, as a part of such license, shall show proof of a current rabies vaccination which shall have been administered by a veterinarian."
You can purchase a pet license in person at the Animal Shelter Tuesday - Saturday, excluding major holidays, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. You may also purchase by mail by completing the license application, enclosing proof of rabies vaccination, proof of spay/neuter surgery, if applicable and a check or money order for the license.
